I may finally have come up with a major!!

I met with a guy at the career development services today. We talked about majors because I don't have one and I have no idea.

I have a career in mind but no major yet.

Until today, sort of. I mean its not official and I'm still researching this. But I think I may major in Sociology and then get a minor in Social Work.

=D

It's a good job to go into =3 you get a lot of oprotunities in schools, mostly, and other organizations.

~ It's a cosmic joke that I'm a lesbian, because I understand men so well but women are a complete mystery to me.

Yeah. I'm actually hoping

Yeah. I'm actually hoping to become a therapist, though. So not inside of schools. I've had bad experiences with them so I don't want to get into the stickiness of that all over again.

American universities are so

American universities are so confusing!
You go to uni without knowing a major? o:

There are some parts of

There are some parts of universities that will make you declare a major at the beginning, for example if they have like a top-notch architecture major, you have to apply as an architecture student. Otherwise you cant major in it. Something like that. Basically, you have to know for sure that you're dedicated to that program because otherwise it can be messy trying to leave because its so competitive that they dont want people just dropping out of their school.

But besides that kind of stuff, I think a lot of people going to college dont know the direction they want to go. We have pre requisite classes to immerse us into numerous different courses....everything from foreign language to philosophy. We get a taste of everything, and that's how some people decide what they like to do.

For some its different than others. My own story doesnt fit into either of these two categories, to be honest.

Have you considered

Have you considered psychology? I guess it depends on the kind of therapy you want to do. But anyway, congrats:)very very very admirable field as I've said before

I have considered

I have considered psychology. Actually, upon entering college my intended major was psychology. I've decided to stray away from that because, though I find it fascinating, the place at which I attend school the psychology major is heavily science-based.

Rather than being seen as a social science at my school, it is considered one of the "hard" sciences, such as biology and chemistry.

If this weren't the case, I'd probably gravitate toward psychology without too much hesitation. But being that it is so heavily rooted in science, I want to stay away. I tend to do poorly in science classes--they're very hard for me and not so interesting. And the last thing I want is a major in which I'm getting Cs for all the classes, you know?

I want to major in something of which I feel as though I can be effective and proud of what I'm working on. I don't think it's smart to major in something in which I tend to do poorly.

Thank you :)

(Sorry for the long spiel, by the way. I think it was probably really roundabout. I'm still waking up :P )

I see where you're coming

I see where you're coming from, so sociology is an awesomely smart choice :)
(and probably way more fun than psychology)

^_^ yay, glad you agree. You

^_^ yay, glad you agree.

You should visit and tell my parents why sociology isn't a bad major and how being a social worker/therapist is a *good* thing. Its not like I'm telling them I'm doing something illegal. Why cant this be good enough or be what I'm *supposed* to be doing?
hmphr.

Good for you!

You could definitely make a good therapist, and I could see you doing well in those majors. Congratulations!

Haha @the psychology thing- the kind of 'hard science' psychology is the sort that I'm interested in. When it's more emotional or personal, it becomes more difficult for me- this is partially because I have many bad experiences with 'child specialists' telling me exactly what I'm thinking and wanting, and it frustrates the hell out of me because it's impossible to teach exactly what will be going on in a person's head. Behavioural psychology seems to lead to a lot of generalizations that can end up hurting people. I love psychology when it's the physiological workings and science of the mind. It's cool to see other perspectives.

I suppose that if you want to be a therapist, though, you'd want to go for the more personal stuff. I wish the best for you!
