We are all a product of society, it's what we've been brainwashed into thinking. In fact, we dont even really think about the things we say or do because they've become normal to us. :P
I personally dont really like the whole "you're the guy/girl in this relationship" kinda thing. I personally like playing both roles with someone who also does the same. I do feel obligated to stick with one role, and it's annoying.
I think more couples should experiment with your idea on mutual love and affection without feeling obligated to take on a role and stick with it. And also having one role in a relationship, sexual or not, can get a little boring after awhile :P.
