Everyone would just love to be a tortured artist, although I don't think there's been one before or since Van Gogh.
Maybe I'll believe someone when they tell me of their deep inner pain, when they kill themselves after painting something like The Starry Night: http://www.vangoghgallery.com/painting/starryindex.html

I don't need company in the company of you. I don't need love, your love will do. And I've got you and you've got me and this is all you need. I don't need air, I don't need to breathe. I don't need rest, I don't have time to sleep.
Nary a one, before or since?
Nary a one, before or since? Surely Poe qualifies, at the very least?
I think,
part of the fame from their art is BECAUSE we see them as being "tortured". Which I mean, is no reason to admire someone's art. Van Gogh was great, but on his own accord, not just because he was majorly depressed and crap. I don't want anymore children admiring people who are OH SO TROUBLED and thinking people will admire everything they do if they're all emo ;)

"Of her 143 paintings, 55 are self-portraits which often incorporate symbolic portrayals of physical and psychological wounds. She insisted, "I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality."
His suicide is suspect...
A recently published biography makes a strong case for Van Gogh's death not being suicide:
