Prologue.........Kyle/Arata
Chapter 1....Normal? Don’t be so sure…
~Prologue~
-Kyle-
I never thought about it; how I was going to die. I always thought my
death would be a peaceful one. Like dying in your sleep. Nice and
calming, next to Arata, my brother. It was the ideal way to die. Next
to the person you would give your life for. Next to the person you
would love for all eternity. Next to your soul mate. Sadly, that is
not always the case.
“Brother?” I ask.
“Yes Kyle?” Arata replies.
“What is going to happen now?”
“Truthfully... I have no idea.”
“Will we ever-”
“Don't you dare say it.”
“Sorry.”
“It's okay. Just a thought, that's all.”
“I love you.”
“I know.”
The screaming crowd is making it hard to hear. So we decide to stop
talking. To enjoy our final moments together in silence. My hand
reaches over and intertwines around his. We were going to face this
together. We were born together and we will die together.
I look at the device that holds our fate. The wooden frame, the metal
chain and gears, and the incredibly sharp blade. I begin to wonder how
fast it falls. From the second the handle is pulled to the moment
where it makes contact with your head. I think about the people whose
jobs are to pull that dreaded handle. What are their thoughts as they
“Kyle.”
“Wait. What?”
“I think so...” I begin to cry.
“Love, it'll be fine.”
“I know. I just wished we had more time. More time to be together.”
“I do too.”
I look at Arata. I can tell he is trying to be the strong one here.
He is trying to keep me calm about this entire situation. I can tell
how he feels though. I always can. Even when he tries to be strong I
am one of the few people who can see through his act. I reach to hug
him. As we hug he snaps and tears begin pouring rapidly down his face.
I look at him and wipe them off with my finger. Like he did for me when we were younger.
“Don't worry...” I feel my voice quiver.
“I know.”
I look at him and smile. I begin to lean in and our lips meet for the
last time. Everything seems to stop when we kiss. It is always so
magical, so incredibly perfect. I pull away and look into his eyes. I
never could figure out how he could make red eyes so incredibly
beautiful. I hear a scream and me and Arata's heads immediately turn.
It's Kylie being dragged toward the stand. We can only watch in horror
as Amylith sobs and cries. We listen to Kylie scream as she is
strapped in and the wooden rectangle surrounds her neck.
“LET HER GO!!! PLEASE!!!! Please...”
The man reaches for the handle and we hear Kylie shriek in fear.
“Thud.”
This is horrible. Ending lives based on what the majority thinks. We
did nothing wrong. It's just who we are. This was never our fault. We didn’t choose this life. I
see Amylith step up and strap herself in by her own accord. She waves
to the handle puller and the blade drops. I feel myself blank out.
“I guess...” I look around. “Is it only the two of us?”
“I love you.”
“I love you too.”
“Forever?”
“Forever. You should know that by now. Don't you?”
“Wha-!” I say as I'm dragged away
“KYLE-KUN!!!”
This is useless but I'm going to try my damnedest to get out. My hand glows with flame. I reach out and grab the man holding me. He screams
and I start running. This crowd is clearer than I thought it was
because I've gotten pretty far now. I look back for a second and run
straight into a wooden pole. I fall over.
That's it. My hands hit the ground and I watch Kyle lift up. “Go.
Run.” I think, but it's too late. They've got him.
“NO!” He screams.
“No...” I begin to cry again.
He's at the platform now. I can't look at what is about to happen. I
hear the straps tighten. Kyle looks at me still crying. I'm crying
too.
“Arata... Don't forget... Forever...” The handle gets pulled.
~Arata~
I drop to my knees. “No...” I whisper, tears streaming downward. I watch various people walk to the stand and remove my brother's now lifeless body. I want to kill them, they're so disrespectful. They throw it into a pile with the rest of my friends. I look closer and I see all of their heads in a bucket. I know what I have to do now. Go down willingly. Then it classifies as suicide, not murder. I'll feel better that way. I close my eyes.
“Kyle. Brother. I love you with all of my heart and soul. You should know what I am about to do. I highly doubt that you'll mind. Correction. I know that you won't mind. I'll see you soon. I love you.”
I step up to the stand making a careful note of where the lever is. I lie down and look at the blade above me. I smile knowing what I am about to do. In fact I'm happy. I lift my foot, ignoring shouts from the crowd. Now they've taken notice of my presence on the stand. Apparently they were too occupied with the disgrace of my brother and friend's bodies. I close my eyes as I kick the lever. I feel the blade slice my throat, and then there is nothing more.
~ Normal? Don’t be so sure…~
I spring upward in my bed.
“Oh my God…. What was that dream?” I look over at my brother. He grunts, rolls over and opens his eyes.
“Arata? Are you okay?”
“Yeah…” I whisper, playing with my hands.
“Brother, I can tell when you lie to me. What was your dream about?” I sigh to myself, knowing that I can’t dodge this question.
“Um…. We died?”
“Was it by force?”
“Yeah, it was.”
“Okay. That’s creepy…”
“Yeah it was…. Especially….” I begin to cry. “Especially… watching you die.”
“Arata,” Kyle reaches over and hugs me, resting his head on my shoulder. “It was only a dream.”
“I know, but it felt so real.” I sob. “It really felt like you died. Like I lost you…”
“Arata, please calm down.” Kyle looks at me and then softly kisses me on my forehead. “I’m here now, still alive.”
“Yeah.” I look at the clock behind Kyle and notice that it’s almost six. “Hey, Kyle, we need to get ready for school. It’s our first day of freshman year, remember?”
“Yeah it is! We no-longer have to deal with the hell known as middle school.”
I look at him smiling. I can tell he’s really excited. I mean, I am too but it’s only freshman year. It’s not like we’re seniors or anything.
We both jump out of bed and head over to our walk in closet. Kyle starts scanning clothes and finds two outfits. He hands one over to me.
“It’s all black.” I say.
“I know.”
“So we’re going with the emo slash goth route this year?”
“Yep.”
“Awesome! We did it so well in the 5th grade!”
He then walks over to a drawer filled with accessories and hands me two silver earrings and a ring. I place both into my right ear and slip the ring onto my right hand. He does the same except with his left hand. Once we both have our outfits on, we walk over to a nearby mirror.
“We’re mirror images.” Kyle says.
“Like usual.” I reply.
With one more satisfied look at the mirror, we exit our closet and grab our bags. I look at my brother, wrap my hand around his, and we both head downstairs. Our mom is already there to greet us.
“Good morning, you two.” Our mom says.
“Morning.” The two of us reply, sitting at the table.
“So, are my two lovely boys excited for their first day of high school?”
“Yes we are!”
“That’s good. I know the two of you will do just fine.”
“Thanks Mom.”
“Oh before I forget, here are your emergency bags.” Our mom grabs two small bags and hands them over to us. They each have a bottle in them.
“Thank you.” Arata opens his bag, grabs his bottle and opens it. He holds it to his mouth.
“Arata, brother, it’s for EMERGENCIES. Drink it only when necessary.”
“Sorry Kyle…” He closes the bottle and tosses it into his shoulder bag.
Our mom walks over to the refrigerator. “Okay, seeing as one of my sons is impatient, here you both go.” She opens it and grabs two more bottles and hands them both to us.
“Here you go.”
“Thanks.” Arata says as he opens his bottle and begins to chug it. I slowly drink from mine, savoring the coppery flavor of the substance within. We both finish drinking and we place the bottles into a sink.
“We’re off then!” The two of us say, starting to head out of the front door.
“Enjoy your day!” Our mom says back.
“Okay!” We close the door and head down the driveway and onto the sidewalk.
“Brother, you know that we’re going to have to keep track of ourselves this year right?”
“I know. The cravings are getting stronger.”
“Yeah, they are…”
“Do you think that there are any teens like us at our school? You know, like vampires?”
“I don’t know… But, we can’t risk that getting out. I don’t think we would be able to trick our way out of that, especially around other teenagers.”
“Yeah, but, we can hope right?”
“I guess.”
“Oh look, we’re almost at the school.”
“Yep, Alverno High School.”
“They say it’s the best school in the nation.”
“Kyle, every school says that…”
“I know but still. I can hope, can I?”
“I guess.”
The two of us immediately walk up the front stairs and enter the main building. A girl walks over to the two of us. She’s dressed in all black with black and red streaked hair.
“I’ve never seen you two around before. Are you new to Alverno High?” She asks.
“Yeah.” We both reply.
“What are your names?”
“Arata and Kyle. Yours is?”
“My name’s Raven. So, do you guys know where your lockers are?”
“Yeah, we share locker 217.”
“Oh. I have 224. That means we’ll at least see each other during the day.” She smiles. “Hey, I’m sure you’ve been asked this before but, which one of you is which?”
“Oh.” We both smile in return. “I’m Arata, on the left and my brother Kyle, is on the right.”
She looks at us slightly confused. “Wait a second. Your earrings! Did you two do that on purpose?”
“Yeah. We like the mirror effect it provides.”
“Well I can tell you two apart now. So that’s good?”
“Yeah it is.”
“So Arata, Kyle what are your two first classes?”
“Our first class is algebra with Mr. Lelinski.” Arata answers
“We have the same schedule.” Kyle adds.
“Oh. I didn’t think you two were freshmen.”
“Yeah we are…”
“Don’t worry about it. I am too.”
“So, where is your first class?”
“It’s the same as yours.”
“Cool. I think we should begin heading in that direction. The first bell is about to ring.”
Raven looks at her watch. “Oh crud, it is!”
The three of us begin running off toward our first class. A few moments later, someone grabs my brother.
“Oh look we have a new kid.” The boy says.
“Yes. Yes we do.” A second boy adds.
“It looks like he’s one of those emo types.”
“We don’t like those sorts of people at our school.” The first boy slams Kyle onto a locker, while the second boy punches him in the stomach. I turn and glare at the two boys.
“Get off of him.”
“Why should we?” They ask.
“It would be a smart move on your end. Now stop hurting my brother.” Kyle looks at me.
“Brother…. No….” He coughs, spitting up some blood. “We can’t risk it….”
“Oh. It looks like we have a hero on our hands.”
“I guess we’ll have to fix that.” The first boy runs toward me, about to throw a punch. I grab his hand before it makes contact and I twist it around. I smile evilly at the boy. He screams in pain.
“I told you. You’re stupid for not listening.” The second boy looks at me in utter fear.
“What are you?” He asks. I smile again.
“It’s a secret. One you don’t need to know.” I let go of the first boy’s hand. He turns and runs off. Raven runs over to Kyle.
“Hey. Are you okay?” Kyle licks the blood from his lip.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Can you help me up?”
“Sure.” Raven grabs Kyle’s hand and helps him back onto his feet. Kyle then looks at the second boy.
“I would advise you not to mess with either of us again. You got that?” He nods slowly and runs off. Raven looks at Arata.
“Okay. I have a question. How the HELL did you manage to catch that boy’s arm before it made contact with you?
“I just did.”
“But his arm was going at least 15 miles per hour. I blinked and you had already twisted his hand. There’s no way someone could’ve done that.”
“I guess that I….-“
“Also, what’s up with your teeth? I saw the smile you gave that boy. You looked downright evil.”
“Um…” Arata looks over at Kyle and mouths something. Raven’s head turns.
“I saw that.”
“Shit!” Kyle whispers.
“So what did I tell him?” Arata asks.
“You asked him if I knew what you two were.”
“Oh no…”
“You didn’t know that I could read lips could you?”
“No…”
“So, do you have a guess as to who we are?”
“I don’t have a guess.” Kyle sighs in relief.
“I have the answer.”
“Which is?”
“You two are vampires.”
I watch Arata look at me, then at Kyle, then back to me.
“So….?” I ask. He doesn’t answer me and glances back to his brother. They both appear to be deep in thought.
“Are you two?” Arata snaps out of his train of thought and looks at me.
“Telepathic? Yeah, but we’re twins so it’s kind of a given isn’t it?”
“Well I guess that’s true… Hey, I have another question. You two are really vampires right?”
“Yeah. I thought we kind of made that clear…” Kyle and I reply.
“Oh. You are then. I apologize for my idiocy…”
“It’s okay.”
“Hey, don’t we have to get to class?”
“Oh crap we do don’t we!”
The three of us run down the hallway and enter room 117. I watch Kyle quietly close the door behind us. We all rush to our seats. Raven is in front of me, while Kyle is to my right. We’re in the back of the room.
“Ahem?” Mr. Lelinski looks up from his paper at the three of us. “The three of you, come to my desk.” We hear some murmurs as we walk up to his desk.
“Sir?” Raven begins. “My friends Kyle and Arata got into a predicament this morning. That’s why we were late.”
“I can see that.” He looks at Kyle. “I can also see the blood dripping from Mr. Shinoriti’s nose. Arata, go take your brother to the clinic. Raven, go sit back down and copy the notes I’ve written onto the board.”
“Yes sir.” She turns and sits back down. Kyle and I exit the room making sure to close the door behind us.
“How long have we been here?” Kyle asks me wiping the blood from his nose away.
“Not even an hour.”
“Great.” Kyle rolls his eyes.
“Mom never said that this was going to be easy. Everyone knows that high school sucks.”
“That’s true.” Kyle wraps his hand around mine as we keep walking. “But, at least you’re here to make it bearable.”
“Hey, Kyle why are we going to the clinic? Your nose has stopped bleeding and I don’t really think that whoever is the nurse at this school really needs to look at it.”
“That’s true. I’d know if it was broken anyway.”
“We’re a good ten minutes from the clinic. It’ll take about ten minutes for me and you to walk there, seven waiting for a diagnosis which we’ve already taken care of, and ten to get back to the classroom. That gives us almost thirty minutes of free time.”
“So you want to go to the roof?”
“It was an idea.”
“It’s the first day of school. Do we really want to tick off Mr. Lelinski?”
‘We have a whole year to deal with the guy. I don’t think he’ll mind it the first day, just as long as we don’t to it too often.”
“Okay.”
“I mean. Personally, I really don’t even want to be here.”
“I know. I don’t want to be here either. I’d rather just spend time with you.”
I look at Kyle, probably with one of the most idiotic looking expressions on my face ever. I lean forward and softly kiss him. I watch him blush and we continue walking.
“Arata-kun… We’re in a school, not at home. We could get caught and if we did we’d never have a normal school year.”
“I don’t care. I can’t kiss my brother when he looks adorable?”
“Well….” Kyle stutters. “Still it’s a school. A high school, you know how fast gossip travels in these places? What if news of our relationship got out? We’d never hear the end of it.”
