Or... I could also envisage that neither of you said anything. This, for me, is a dead give-away for the fact that a telemarketer is on the other end: If I pick up the phone and say "hello" (or some other greeting), I'll hang up if there is no response within about 2 seconds! (Telemarketers are usually on a bank of phones and it takes time for a live operator to actually acknowledge that one of their many simultaneous calls has responded!)
