The Fisher King (An Arthurian Legend)

Tophat's picture

A boy king is alone in the woods, for he must search for a sign from God in order to be king.
One day, he suddenly sees a flame, and he hears a voice from heaven.
It tells him that he will be king, and that he will use the Holy Grail to heal man's wounds.
But he is distracted by visions of glory.
In the flame he sees the Grail itself, and in his rash pride he reaches in to grab it.
But when he reaches in, the Grail disappears, leaving him to be horribly wounded by the flame.
Years pass, and the boy becomes King.
But the wound grows deeper as time passes, and he becomes unable to walk. All he can do is fish in a pond.
He sends his best and bravest knights to find the Grail, but none return.
One day, a Fool comes to the castle.
The King is alone, and sad.
He has lost his will for life.
The Fool sees this, and comes to the King.
He asks the King what he can do for him.
The King says simply, "I'm thirsty, and I need a drink."
The Fool goes to the pond, and fills a cup with the water. As the King drinks from it, his wounds disappear! He realizes that the cup was the Holy Grail.
The King is amazed, and asks the Fool,
"I've sent my brightest and bravest men to search for this. How did you find it?"
The fool only says, "I don't know. I knew only that you were thirsty."
