Why does gayness exist?

swimmerguy's picture

LGBT just seems unnecesary and stupid.

Before you freak out, I'm saying NOTHING about gay people. Just the concept of gayness.

They have said genes are a contributing factor, but where do these genes come from? These days at least, being gay is often a sure ending of your genes right here and now.
There does not seem to be any reason for why gayness has to exist.

However, had I thought about it, I would think that there has to be at least a FEW people that are attracted to their own gender, or both, or are physically one gender and mentally the other.
But, if I also thought about it, I would say thought should be impossible. A paradox. (Seriously, your neurons are just electrical cells. That they can produce emotions and thoughts and rational-ness out of that vast and infinitely complicated labyrinth is mind blowing.)

But, conjectures about why gayness exists are useless.
The important thing is that it does, and frankly I'm glad it does, and I'm glad that I myself am gay.
Because I'm here, I'm queer, and no need to make a fuss over it, it's just the way I am.

are you saying that

are you saying that evolutionarily, gayness shouldn't exist? cuz if you are, i totally agree. (and if you aren't, there's another idea to chew on...o.O)

Exactly.

There is absolutely no reason it should exist.

When I still thought I was

When I still thought I was Christian, I though homosexuality was "God" limiting the ability of humanity to reproduce to lengthen the life of our planet a bit longer. Now I see that it is Selene touching our hearts and lowering our fear of what the world will think, just to follow our soul's twin(soul mate if you prefer).

So what? I'm Wiccan/Paegan... GET THE FUCK OVER IT!

??

nobody really knows why gayness exists lol but, does it need a reason? does love need a reason? we can't control who we fall in love with or why, we just do. gay is just a different kind of love ^^

I think that gayness started

I think that gayness started as a gene mutation was passed down becasue people (even though they are gay) still continued to reprocuce. And the gene mutation still happens randomly.

Define "Shouldn't"

Because from the evolutionary standpoint, it makes perfect sense. It's just like any other genetic mutation that doesn't foster reproduction; it dies out after one generation. Which is why we don't have large populations of homosexuals. Like fox333 said, the mutation still happens randomly.

But personally, I have a hard time believing that it is so cut and dry. I don't think there is one mutation that makes people gay. If this where true, it would probably be easier for scientists to track the source of homosexuality.

Im not even sure that it is

Im not even sure that it is a genetic mutation, it could be something that happens prenatal.

I dunno. To me, it's just a thing that happens... I don't really care to know WHY I like girls, I just do. Maybe it's a mutation. Maybe it's determined by environmental factors in early childhood. I don't know.

Uhh...

I don't get the question, since it seemingly comes from a place of aberration.

Why does dirt exist? or a fern? Or a flower? Gayness is just part of the natural condition, like any of those.

I'd ask why you seem to think the world should exist without it?

swimmerguy's picture

yes...

I'm not saying I personally think it shouldn't exist. Just throwing that out there.

However, it seems that evolution would eliminate this gene, if indeed it is one.
The only thing that the gene does is limit it's own frequency, it seems like it'd be pretty easy to eliminate.

And if it did just occur randomly, then that would have to be an EXTREMELY common genetic mutation.

Hmm...

Evolution doesn't have a will, though.

If all heterosexuals have the possibility of gay offspring, then how would it be removed?

Obviously, if gays had to reproduce to keep it going, then it could disappear, but since it is available across all humans, as far as we know, not sure why it would disappear. Seems benign.

I'm sorry

but we have two very different ways of viewing the world. Which is good. I wouldn't want to sway everyone to my view.

I'm not expressing my view, but Darwin's.

It could...

...be very possible that this is a common genetic condition. In that way, it would be similar to Down Syndrome, another genetic disorder (albeit not exactly a mutation) that limits reproduction.

Personally though, I think fox333 has a good point; it would make a lot more sense if sexuality was determined by prenatal conditions. If homosexuality is a result of unbalanced hormones in the womb, that would explain it's frequency. Also, some twins, who have identical genetic makeup, differ in sexuality. Considering that many identical twins can be physically different because of differing levels of nutrients, I think it's entirely plausible that both twins may not be exposed to the same hormones.

Great question. Thoughtful responses...

...but, there's an even more interesting, but related, question:

Why is left-handedness more prevalent amongst gays than straights? Is this feature equally represented between males and females?

Or, is this observation totally off?

The most interesting questions.

I have no answer but that's a cool concept to think about.
