In case you haven't noticed, the United States is not a true democracy. That is because a true democracy SUCKS ASS.
For example, take California. They use propositions to vote on EVERYTHING. Someone once said "In California, chicken coops gained valuable rights on the same day the gays lost them"
One of the problems is that the majorities overwhelm the minorities. That's why we lost gay marriage there. Their congress can vote it in, but the people will vote it out, because no matter what, we are dependent on the support of straight people to get our rights. We have to. We're a minority.
Another problem is that sometimes people don't know what's good for them. In California, they vote an idealized world. They voted to require a supermajority on all tax raises and to cap property tax, while at the same time voting for more services provided by the government. If only it worked that way. It would be very nice to say "more services, less taxes!" But that's why California sucks now.
In representative democracy, at least while we have possibly politicians that will play political games, at least they UNDERSTAND the issues and the state of the country.
People are so stupid sometimes...

I agree with you. Majority's
I agree with you. Majority's rule is just as dangerous as minority's rules. Insofar the only way of preventing a majority abusing its power are judges, but they're terribly difficult to control in federal states.

Well...
I never found the gays/chicken comparison apt, since the chickens only got bigger coops before they get slaughtered. That's a pretty low bar for gaining rights. I was a pro-chicken, pro-gay voter, of course.
If anything, I'd compare the people who voted for Obama and against marriage equality as a more interesting comparison.
