Apparently, as of 2:00 yesterday, our school district was made aware that they have reason to believe that "an unnamed female student" has/had plans to bring a gun to school tomorrow. Awesome.
I understand that normally, most would just shrug this information off as another empty threat, but it is a little different in my town; as a district, we don't hold the best track record when it comes to school safety. A few months ago, a student at one of the high schools in the district was put on probation for possessing an explosive he had planned on using to "go Columbine" on his school. A student at one of the other three high schools was expelled after a similar incident, and a about a year before that, a student I'd known in middle school had attempted to steal a few hundred dollars worth of firearms for unknown purposes. Also, in my freshman year, a kid I'd known since middle school had been expelled for bringing a blade to school and threatening other students.
But the real reason people in my class freak out about this sort of thing is because in seventh grade, some kids actually did make it to their middle school with not just guns, but a hit list. The school was put under lockdown for the day, and the kids had to pee in the garbage. Thankfully, it never escalated to the point where people actually got hurt. But I think it is safe to say that if you make that type of threat at our school, a lot of the seniors and juniors aren't showing up.
Suffice to say, tomorrow will be interesting. And I know that tomorrow night, when absolutely nothing happens, I will see just how stupid and melodramatic I'm being. But I can't help but feel at least a little nervous.
