May you live for many more years and bring hope to many more LGBT teens.
Thanks Jeff. Though I have my disagreements with you, you're actually right in your own overly sarcastic and pragmatic way. But I appreciate your work here and thank you profusely.

All the old celebrity interviews and such are imported back to 1995, but not the rest of the content. It's on my hard drive, though, so we'll get to it at some point.

I started writing articles/interviews that appeared on the front page of a website I was involved with that was going to be this huge gay youth site. Some of the initial interviews (Wilson Cruz, Prayers for Bobby, etc.) were actually initially written for this other site, but then people started asking if they could write stuff, too.
So, a few months out (September/October), I started putting it together, and decided December 1 was enough time to pull it off, including getting submissions from a bunch of teens, a P-Flag mom, etc. This was pre-digital camera, so the fact that we had a lot of pics of gay teens, who were also telling their story, was kinda rare. (A lot of the pics some of the gay teens only had at that time were sort of inappropriate for what we were trying to do with Oasis, so many of their T-shirt collars were added by us, heh).
Ironically, a week or two before launch, I was getting the idea that I didn't want to be connected with that larger site, and decided to spin the magazine off on its own, and decided on Oasis as a name. And a few days before launch, World AIDS Day made a big online push, and all gay sites were going dark on December 1. So, not surprisingly, since I'd already decided I was launching that day... we not only didn't go dark, we launched, heh.

the full story behind the formation of Oasis, I only discovered it when I was chatting with former writer Ty, who gave me a link to his debut entry (column) when I asked him about being gay. I was just amazed at the diversity of the different writers, and especially the fact that many of them were my age!!! Starting out on World AIDS Day really set things off in the right direction :)
I still would love to see the original content before Oasis went "live", and while some of it may seem dated today, those columns had such a profound impact on me that I cherish them as much as my yearbooks from school.

before December is already here. Just click Magazine at the top and then click Last at the bottom of the page. None of the stuff other people wrote is online again yet, though.

Is there a reason that it was on the first day of December, or is that arbitrary?

Depends...
It's a bit of both.
