Crunches...

swimmerguy's picture

Some people say they're extremely easy and pointless, like half-ass sit ups. THAT'S BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT DOING THEM RIGHT! You have to NOT have your hands behind your head, you have to lift your shoulderblades off the ground, and you MOST DEFINITELY need to lift your legs up.

I can do 100 pushups in one go, with little difficulty. But 50 crunches is harder than that! After I'm done with only 50, all I can do is lie down, and have about 10 seconds of intense searing pain. Pushups have NOTHING on crunches! It depends on how high you lift your legs, the fewer inches off the floor, the better.

About the only thing harder than them is squat-thrust-jumps, but crunches are the unnappreciated and misunderstood workout.

(Just felt obligated to say that XD)

unfortunately...

...I've never quite grasped how to not have my hands behind my head without making my neck really, REALLY hurt. I know that means I'm doing something wrong, it's just that no matter how hard I try to use the right abdominal muscles I can't figure out how to fix it. :-)

I agree, though, crunches are not cake.

Please Don't Overdo It

The goals of exercise and stretching are the strengthening of the body's many muscle groups and the enhancement of overall health/stamina. If you are experiencing true pain (and not just exhaustion), you've gone too far --- and your muscles must be given time to repair the damage! Exercising to the point of pain is a no-no...

Please make enhanced health and flexibility your goal... this will pay off with multiple dividends over a lifetime! By all means... don't even think of steroids!

Your performance as a champion swimmer will benefit greatest from maintaining a lithe body, with healthy muscles --- but not muscle-bound!

If you're only getting exhausted...

I think you're not doing them right. The point is to break down your muscle fibers so they get built back up stronger. That hurts.

I know what you mean. I SUCK

I know what you mean. I SUCK AT CRUNCHES DX at least with sit-ups I can use ALL OF MY BELLY.
I really suck at push-ups and pull-ups too. I'm just not very athletic except the fact I can run REALLY fast... but not for a long time.

100 push ups in one go eh?

100 push ups in one go eh? you must be ripped! Errm... I can do like, 20... then I roll over and give up =)

personally I find crunches easier. ya, it burns. but I have a much, much higher tolerance for the burning sensation of doing crunches vs push ups =P

I gotta agree with TTR and

I gotta agree with TTR and DF... Crunches and Sit-ups are by FAR. I have shoulder issues so I can barely do ten push-ups... But I have a runner's body. or fighter's however you choose to see it.

lol I love crunches but then I'm probably doing them wrong. You should totally make a video on the correct way to do crunches :)
