Not to be a downer...

But for those of you who are upset about Maine,

You have a right to be.

I'm just going to say that it is NOT a major shock.

I remember last year, in my Great Book / Politics class we learned that much of the time, if people are voting against things, they will vote yes on the ballot, simply because of the wording that is used. Also, it could be the use of doublespeak... words that most people would have a hard time understanding.

Because the opposition is so hard pressed to "keep the sanctity of marriage," they would be willing to trick the voters, which is sad. It's terrible that we have leaders like this in our country.

Anywho...
GSA meeting today. ^.^ I get to see J (hopefully) for a glorious hour. Sigh...

Ciao, bella.

I know. I won't deny that

I know. I won't deny that I'm angry that the vote went the way it did. But it's SO easy to tell the outcome of these kinds of things. If they were voting FOR gay marriage, more people might have voted yes. Who knows. >.<

And uhm, the GSA meeting was....
Lacking... I guess.
Not so much great as boring. Sad.

Though I did see J.
She seemed down today.

WHY do I always crush on people who don't even have the time of day for me?????

Well, they are a bunch of

Well, they are a bunch of ridiculous Catholics (37%). As I remember, a large donator to the campaign was the catholic diocese of Portland.

Anyway, know what the actual problem is? The system - it's fatally flawed. Referendum Constitutions are the biggest threat to equality and civil liberties, because it trusts the masses with such fundamental rights.

I'm content with being a woodchuck though. I mean after all, Vermont is the most liberal and progressive state there is. Bernie Sanders is a social democrat ; ]

Err...

The actual diocese contributes?!

What exactly am I missing about their tax-exempt status? They seem to break every single rule.

Haha, over 250K. Is anyone

Haha, over 250K.

Is anyone noticing a trend with the "Yes" campaigns. Religious institutions donating massive amounts of money, purporting that same-sex marriage will be taught in school, and donations from individuals that live in other states. Over half the money for Yes on 1 came from non-Maine sources.

Does anyone else feel like this stuff is unethical, especially when the attorney general for Maine said concretely that same-sex marriage wouldn't be taught in school. I feel that ads like this should be held accountable, at the very least, to the truth. But alas, apparently the employment of scare-tactics is totally fine when attacking a legitimate social institution.

On a happier note, know who voted against DOMA in 1996? If you guessed something Vermont-oreinted you're right! Yup, Bernie Sanders joined 66 other representatives in voting "nay"! Wooooh! Go Vermont!

I don't understand why it's

I don't understand why it's so surprising to people that religious institutions are backing so many of these repeals... really, I would think they would be expected to, especially if they publicly state that homosexuality is a sin.

Of course it's unethical! Many religious institututions have a record of supporting unethical doings. As for the "teaching same-sex marriage in schools," I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT. The media has picked up so much coverage on same sex marriage that it's highly unlikely that children as young as 10 or 12 haven't heard about the debate or have some knowledge of homosexuality. Completely rediculous, I tell you.

People find faith-based

People find faith-based institutions making donations to political campaigns to be shocking, because they assume politics and religion don't mix. Ever. Especially in such a blatant way. Oh, and then with the tax-exempt status of churches, they assume that donations like that would go to social services or the maintenance of the religious institutions, not a political campaign.

I wonder how the IRS would react if I put political donations down as a personal allowance...

Hah! You'd have to be blind

Hah! You'd have to be blind not to see that, though. Or supportive of the religious insititutions.. >.< Oi.

I think what she meant is

I think what she meant is that some religious institutions actually want better things for mankind.. unlike the catholic and some protestant churches (especially back in the day.. 16/17/1800's) did/do.

I agree with that, but as a whole, the christian and religious philosophy is just riddled with holes and it's all up to interpretation, which means some asshole on a power trip could gather up a whole bunch of people and call them followers, and do shit like fund a referendum against gay marriage. Sound familiar?? xabillion!

Well...

Yes and no. I mean, Mother Teresa is known for doing good, but Christopher Hitchens wrote a whole book on how horrible she actually was...

It's a bit convenient that they want to take credit for the good, and when it's something bad/controversial, they just point to the Bible and shrug, like, "Sorry, outtamyhands."
