excuse me. i need to sound like the left wing, open minded liberal democrat i am. *ahem*
ANARCHY DOESN'T WORK!!!!
it just DOESN'T. do you people know JUST HOW MUCH our government does for us? how much ANY government does?
who would build our roads? who would teach our children? who would mediate disputes, or give us moral boundries?
we can talk about hte "perfect world" where everyone would work together and be happy, but WAKE UP. we don't live in that world!
we NEED boundries! and no, government is not perfect. of course it isn't! but a lack of governance is NOT the answer!
people tout anarchy like it is our savior. like it is the eden for all good thinking people, but it's not. for a number of reasons.
for one thing, the majority of people, when they say 'anarchy' what they really mean is 'complete democracy'. wha they really want is for each person to have a voice, and for each voice to be heard.
but aside from that. do you know what anarchy means?
it means there are no laws. and sure, there're always laws that some of us don't like. but some laws, MOST laws, are GOOD!
how could we ever get anything done without rules to guide us? yeah, sure, it'd be fun to not have to work, to just goof off all day, and not worry about things. but what happens when the FARMERS start goofing off, while their crops go to waste? what happens when the plumbers stop working? or the electricians? what happens when the factories shut down, and you can't get any more clothes?
"what if," you're bound to say "they didn't?" well, all right then. say the factory that makes your shoes stays running, because for some reason, the people who work there want to keep working.
their employer is under no obligation to pay them, in an anarchy. and none of them are required to adhere to any sort of standards. what if, instead of a shoe factory, it was a food processing unit?
has anyone ever read The Jungle? can you IMAGINE how shoddy the work would be?
now take a moment and think about your daily life. i'll generalize for the sake of time. you get up in the morning, out of a bed that is made to standards so that it doesn't fall apart beneath you. you take a shower and brush your teeth in water that is pumped to you in pipes layed down by men and women who are payed by the government (which really means YOU), in water that is cleaned by the government, again, to standards set so that it won't poison you.
then you eat breakfast, let's say, toast and eggs. many of us here are environmentally conscious, so let's take the eggs first. the chickens they come from are raised at farms which again, adhere to regulations so that we feel safe eating non-toxic, non-poisonous eggs, not to mention that the chickens are kept to a minimum standard of living (perhaps it's not perfect, but it's better than it could be). and the toast you eat? it came out of a toaster that is made AGAIN to adhere to standards so that it doesn't burn or electircute you. it's plugged into the wall, which is attached, as is the rest of your house, to the national power grid, which, HEY, is run and regulated BY THE GOVERNMENT.
the toothpaste you used earlier? that's made without things like lead, because the GOVERNMENT made a law saying that since lead is poisonous to us, we can't use it in stuff we use every day (like toys, and paint).
i can go on. how about the car you get a ride in to school? ever think about how safe that is? or why? what about the road? i'll bet it's pretty smooth. i'll bet it's got lines, and is repaired every few years. i'll bet if you live in a rural area, it's less well maintained, but when it gets really bad, who do you go to? that's right. your local government.
"government", especially in the US, has gotten such a bad rap over the last...decades, really. but it's not. if you have a beef with it, SPEAK UP. that's how the system works. there can be no change if we do not speak up.
and it DOES work. no, it's nto perfect. of course it's not!!! we live in a nation with MILLIONS of people. how can you POSSIBLY expect them all to be happy?
but look at the most recent election. the PEOPLE were ready for a change, and so, we have change. not just obama. but the house of representatives now has an unprecidented majority of democrats, and the senate has an almost filibuster proof majority of dems as well.
our government speaks for us. it is not evil, it is not bad. only when it begins to serve it's own self interest is it a thing to be hated.
okay. left wing ranting and raving is done.
please, feel free to comment (if you got through all of that :P), and voice your own opinion. as long as you have solid thoughts behind it, and rational reasoning, i will respect it, and concider it. i might not agree, but i will respect it.
your lesson on taxes will follow in a few days.
have a good night y'all.

there...........
is to a perfect goverment. one ruled by ferrets, where humans are milidley worked slaves( except me, cause someone has to translate ferret to human)
I'm with Icarus
I have a problem with big government. But I mean, some kind of government is necessary, people can't be expected to be good and help each other out of the goodness of their hearts.
The government is here for us, not us here for them.
And I think that V, from V for Vendetta had the right idea, that governments should fear their people, not people their government. :)
okay, so, tell me what
okay, so, tell me what "small" government is. i hear that all the time, but i don't really know what it is.

Government that doesn't get
Government that doesn't get in the business of things like marriage and other things that don't hurt anyone. Things we don't need government for, they should stay out of.
i can see where you're
i can see where you're coming from on the issue of marriage, but think about this. the government (at least here in the US, i don't speak for other countries) is a representation of the people. we elect a congress and state legislatures to speak as best they can for US.
so on the issue of marriage, specificly, wouldn't it make more sense to win over the people, not just get the government out of our lives?
cause to follow that logic, we might not have had a Little Rock 9. there's a great example of the government intruding on our lives, and i'll bet you a LOT of people were saying exactly what you are right now. government shouldn't intrude.
so where do you draw the line? i'm not saying i know....cause i don't. i agree with you to some extent. i also definitly think that government, ANY government is imperfect. some of them more than others. ours is certainly flawed, but as winston churchill (YAY) pointed out, it's the best we've come up with so far.
lol, i'm a TOTAL churchill fan!!

In your examples above...
A small government would build the roads, but NOT teach our kids or provide morals. The problem with a lot of anti-big government types is that their solutions are worse. They want to privatize schools, but then let them be run by people who believe in Intelligent Design, etc.

different opinion
human beings are animals. i am zachov and i am an anarchist. a lot of people think that anarchy is chaos. it is not. anarchy means lack of authority. i am an anarchist because i dont think animals should be able to control other animals. people should'nt have the power to tell other people what they can and cannot do. every person has a mind and an opinion. if they are restricted then they are not free. freedom is the most important thing for any person. its more important than peace and more important than being able to shop at holister and go to school. anarchy does not mean people wont have clothes and food. for thousands of years, people have been growing their own food, making their own clothes, and maintaining relationships with other people. anarchy does not mean there are no rules. all rules are made by the individual and followed by the individual. native americans lived in anarchy. they chose to follow their tribes rules. they couldve left because the land was empty. now, the land is not empty. its filled with millions and millions of people who argue and kill and abuse and are punished for doing something that another person with power told them not to do. justice can easily exist in anarchy. groups of people can live together in anarchy. people can agree on rules. its the amount of people that is the significant factor that determines the chance of everyone being happy. in a world of 3 people, agreeing on a small set of rules in order to provide safety for each person is simple. its anarchy still. its freedom. freedom to follow the rules or leave. then u argue that america is just that. if u dont like the rules, then leave. well, anarchy does in fact need many people in order to be good. people need to be alone and to make things, and sell things and trade to form relationships and business relationships to provide for themselves. this is anarcho-capitalism, the form of anarchy in which i believe in. i believe that there is no right way to live if u r living in someone else's ideals. anarchy takes away your restrictions. as soon as humanity can adapt and become less spoiled and needy, people can live as right as earthly possible by living in anarchy. the only reason u think anarchy cant work is because it cant provide what government provides. but no one needs what others have to offer. the ONLY thing humans NEED from other humans is contact. americans are so used to living with things that come from government and rules and limits and authority but people do not realize that they only want what they want when they think they can have it. when u want something and cant get it because someone else is in charge of u, u are being ruled by authority and that is wrong. as long as it doesnt harm others, a person must be able to do what the person wants because it is what is best for the person. every person governs themselves and can if they wish look out for other people, but not rule them. anarchy is not survival of the fittest, it is not a cage of people doing what they want. it is the world and it is access to the world and the ability to be alone and without care. and if u have care, it is no different than that of the current system. in this system, ur responsibilities and worries are what the rulers make it for you. if u dont accept it, u cant live in this country. in anarchy, your worries and responsibilities are what the world (and if u are religious) God make for u. that is the difference between anarchy and non-anarchy. it is being bound short by people. or being stretched to the fullest possibilities being bound only by what the world cannot give you. by what the ocean and trees and space and air can and cannot give. NOT what the government can and cannot give u. i am an anarchist because i will let planet earth and God limit me and i will not let other humans ideas limit me. anarchy is not chaos or lack of rules altogether or riots or survival of the fittest. it is humans having unlimited access to the world and within the mind and body and spirit of the individual. that is what anarchy is. it is freedom.
