Public school officials in Chicago, Illinois, are recommending approval of a "gay-friendly" high school because harassment and violence are causing gay students to skip class and drop out at alarming rates.
The School for Social Justice Pride Campus, which officials say will not be exclusive to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, is aimed at being safe and welcoming for any student looking for another school option, said Josh Edelman, executive officer in the Chicago Public Schools' Office of New Schools.

The School for Social
The School for Social Justice Pride? That's a mouthful.....
I need to do some more research on these schools...could potentially work as a term paper for my Social Psych class....
I don't know, I think I would have just stuck with my regular public school, though I do think it's a nice option for kids who've been harassed to the point that it's jeopardizing their education.
what's sad is that they have
what's sad is that they have to resort to finding an alternative for these kids. whatever happened to the innocence of youth?

i tihnk this school is the WORST idea ever.
think abouit.. is it not alienating our "kind".. are we not alienated enough?!
GRRRR
Hmm...
Nothing new, they already exist in Dallas, NYC, and LA (that I know of, probably more).
Sometimes you ant to fight and stand your ground, but sometimes you just want to put yourself in a place where you can just be comfortable and learn.

especially in high school,
especially in high school, which is tough enough to get through without being gay.

nevermind
there's a GLBT high school in toronto,
i think it's called The Triangle Program
WHAT! They have high schools
WHAT! They have high schools full of gays! I wanna go there! Chicago's not that far though..
I remember a MTV Truelife about a gay highschool in Texas, I never got to watch it though.
:O
seriously it just makes the whoe school a target for anybody who wants to plan an attack.. i mean our night clubs get trashed.. whats to stop our schools?
we too are average people.. why should we be any different? Being gay is not a religon... hence we unlike religous schools.. i dont really see the point in seperation. then again i dont even agree with sole religon schols that focus on the one religon and belief... this creates discrimination.. what creates hate, which is the foundation for war.
i hope you guys get my connection here..
I get your connection, but I
I get your connection, but I think that aspects of it are flawed.
A school is not the same as a night club, a high school is supposed to be a place that is a safe environment conducive to learning and that's what these particular schools are seeking to provide students with. This isn't creating discrimination, the discrimination is already there and this an attempt to circumvent it and provide students that prior to this have been in learning environments that have not enabled them to live up to their potential and sometimes not even to live.
Unlike with racial segregation in schools this is entirely VOLUNTARY. The students that attend these schools, and the parents that send their children there are attempting to making a choice that will benefit their child in the long run and in many ways to protect them.
On average homosexual youths have the highest drop out rate and suicide rate amongst teenagers, this could potentially reduce that for some of them.
I think it would be great if we didn't have to do this, if we could safely achieve integration of gay teens in society without having to worry about their safety, but having been a gay teen in a community that was far from accepting--that had me terrified of the repercussions of being out, and was essentially an environment that I don't think I would have made it out of if I hadn't moved when I did, I think that these schools can serve as valuable resources for some students.
I understand where you're coming from in the sense that we shouldn't allow ourselves to be driven out of the mainstream--out of our schools and our jobs and our communities, but I also understand the desire to leave and to feel safe and to be tired of fighting.
I chose the college that I did because I knew that it had a vibrant queer community and that my sexual orientation was not going to be an issue in the classroom or amongst the majority of my peers and I don't begrudge youth wanting that same opportunity for their education.
Some teenagers can handle being in an environment where they're harassed constantly and still get through it, but others can't, and given that I feel all of them deserve the opportunity to make it through their education, even if it means creating a school like this that seem so strange and isolated. I wish that it didn't have to come to this, but it has and here we are attempting to create a place where kids feel safe to learn.
Hmm...
Yeah. What she said.
But your utopia does sound nice, though... sadly, not enough people live there.
Things will get easier after the rapture.

I guess I can kinda see
I guess I can kinda see where you're going with this arguement, but you need to look at everything in the long run. GLBT students dropping out because of harassment means that they don't go on to college. That means "we" are not in high places. We'll be stuck in the lower class of society. We won't be in a position to show our worth and actually DO something. Usually, people with higher authority/respect are the ones that make an impact and change people's views. And how do we do this? By earning a good education.
High school is stupid in that kids emphasize things way more than they need to be, such as being gay. High school kids fuss and make it some outrageous taboo, but once you get to college no one cares. So, let's just take care of our fellow GLBT students and help them through high school, that way they can go to college if they choose.
Right, and why don't we
Right, and why don't we create a school for negros, for asians, for catholics, for socialists, for nut-allergies, for phenylketonurics and every other god damn group in the world.
This just intends to separate us from reality. That's all it does. The truth is, we have to live with people. Not just people like us, but mostly people that are not like us. People who may hate us, who we may disagree with and people who we hate. This is something called life. I dunt want to be separated from life. I want to exist in life naturally, not in some manufactured world.
sonuvabitch.
...There are schools for
...There are schools for Catholics.
And, yeah, the real world isn't separated like that. But maybe some of us need the separation until we can get our feet under us.

I think this sounds like a
I think this sounds like a horrible idea they should try to fix the problems in the current schools instead of segregating us even more. I mean once schools what's next, jobs, whole communities....I don't want to be separated from the rest of the world I want to live in it. Plus I would hate the fact that I just want to a certain school b/c I was gay.
And catholic schools weren't built to separate catholics from the rest of society they were built to teach a certain religion and that's a big difference.
Fair point. Okay, how about
Fair point.
Okay, how about gender segregated schools? You know, Presentation, Bellarmine, etc?

well, there would be more girls around.
But social interaction in day to day life I think is a good thing
Again gender segerated
Again gender segerated schools weren't created to keep boys and girls apart in the sense that they pick on each other and harass each other. They were not made b/c the two groups hate each other, in fact its the opposite reason they were created, so that each gender could focus on school instead of each other.
I'd have to say that any
I'd have to say that any form of social segregation violates any ideals found in true emancipation... And that's what society is working towards.
Anyway, according to Andean Shammanism, we're on the feminist part of the wave cycle now and the crest hasn't even been reached. Which means, a rise in civil liberties, tolerance and acceptance is expected to happen. Goes along with the karma thing.
Hmm...
I don't consider anything to be segregation that is voluntary. When Christians send their kids to parochial school, it is because it reflects their desire to be in an environment that they find more conducive to learning (unlike public school with all that nonsense about fossils and snakes that can't talk). But no one calls that segregation.

Either you don't know what
Either you don't know what you're talking about or you're a conflict theorist. Anyway, it's simply a safe environment for learning is all. Why would you deny anyone that option?
You speak about learning,
You speak about learning, but you neglect to realize one of the benefits of a heterogeneous classroom, social interaction. When we mix, beautiful things happen. Sometimes it doesn't work out so pleasantly, but that's the nature of the world. We have to accept that. I'm not saying that we shouldn't have unregulated classrooms either.
Now safe spaces in school is something fine I think. You still are exposed to many different groups of people, but you have somewhere where you feel safe and you can talk to someone. I think my school would be an excellent example of this.
I'd also like to add that the phrase "you don't know what you're talking about" isn't a great form of communication. It can make someone kind of feel inferior or something along those lines.
Sorry, I just get angry at
Sorry, I just get angry at people when they spew sociological ideas and they don't know what they're talking about. I'm not saying this is you, since I don't know your educational background, but people assume Sociology is something that is so easily learned and that anyone can argue it. If it was that easy it wouldn't require such extensive study. I've taken (and am in) some Sociology classes, so I tend to defend the field, especially since my major is technically Sociology/Anthropology.
actually I was all like
actually I was all like "sociology is easy as shit". Until I saw the notes. And I was all like... "Aw fuck no! Not taking that class in highschool. Chemistry all the way!"
meow
fuck that, we should have gay only schools where fucking straighties get beat up! lelelelelelelellelela!
You seem to be a very
You seem to be a very negative person.
What would that solve? Students would still get beaten, and no one deserves that. If that was meant to be a joke, you need to work on your sense of humor and/or realize that there is no way to discern tone on the internet.
I think he was joking. Most
I think he was joking. Most of Adam's posts read as a little on the outrageous side, not as serious (no offense, Adam). But I agree that the idea of people getting beat up isn't funny.
I'm still figuring out how to express my own thoughts on the main topic, so I'll save them for a separate post...
