We had a campus lockdown tonight.
I got evacuated from work mid phone conversation. I had no idea what was going on, aside from being told I needed to wrap up the conversation, so I was going to give the girl my info--and then I ended up rambling something about danger and needing to leave the building before hanging up and booking it out of there with my bag. I guess I should call the kid back, but when I do, should I tell her that I was evacuated from Mills Hall because of a double homicide and hostage situation, or should I bullshit something about a fire drill and talk about how safe campus is? Decisions, decisions, decisions....
There was a shooting just outside the back gate on Sunday as well, across the street from the elementary school that I work at on campus--I'm guessing, given that this was the general area we weren't supposed to go in tonight, that it's where all this shit went down.
Oakland...why did I think you'd be an ideal setting for an education?
At least I get to see a lot of helicopters, right? Right?

Hmm...
I just saw a memorial on my corner, and looked it up and saw someone was robbed and shot after exiting the nearby medical marijuana shop on Sunday. But usually in The Mission here, the people who get shot know the people shooting them, so not like they're just shooting random people. I don't think I know anyone who wants to shoot me..

The Hell's Angels were involved, so who knows what exactly was up, but I guess it was somehow connected to what happened on Sunday.
I have no idea why this particular stretch of Seminary Ave. is so popular, it's kind of lame, then again the Laurel District on the other side is pretty het up with hooking, so maybe it's their only option for where to take care of business?
But yeah, in this area there's pretty high correlation between victims and shooters sharing some kind of relationship, granted I can't speak for the entirety of Oakland, but we're in a pretty shady area.
my skewl is in a fairly ghetto part of the city...
there are sexual assaults here on a fairly frequent basis, and in the past few years there have been a stabbing and a rape. :-(

We had a rape a couple of years ago, and armed gunmen love the foresty bits of our island.
Campus itself is pretty mellow, but I think that's only because the school is so small and the majority of students, aside from maybe a third of the grad students, are women.
Apparently, and I've become desensitized, the area is pretty traumatizing for a lot of our first year students and has some of the highest crime levels in the city. We have a razor wire fence for a reason.

*Sigh* Cities. They're a lot of fun, but they're not safe. And I know this after living my whole life in 3 different large cities. Last week we also had to evacuate campus: there was a bomb threat. What's really sad, is no one panicked or anything... it's not like that's normal here, but we're sorta used to that. Good luck!

Oakland..
What really sucks is that Oakland is such a cool historical and cultural city. I work down town and bike commute most the time and its amazing what you cool shit you see. Its real, but you always have be aware of whats going on around you & be prepared to defend yourself. The only reason i say that is that you never know what people are capable of.
