Greeks sue lesbians
A Greek court has been asked to draw the line between the natives of the Aegean Sea island of Lesbos and the world's gay women.
Three islanders from Lesbos — home of the ancient poet Sappho, who praised love between women — have taken a gay rights group to court for using the word lesbian in its name.
One of the plaintiffs said Wednesday that the name of the association, Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece, "insults the identity" of the people of Lesbos, who are also known as Lesbians.
"My sister can't say she is a Lesbian," said Dimitris Lambrou. "Our geographical designation has been usurped by certain ladies who have no connection whatsoever with Lesbos," he said.

maybe the people that hail from Lesbos could be called Lesbonans....or Lesbonians...or Lesbies....actually I'm claiming that last one.
I'm still trying to find out how you get the word "lesbian" from the word "lesbos". Maybe it's like Illinois=Illinoisan (thank you wikipedia) nor something like that.
Greek is a precursor of
Greek is a precursor of Romance languages, and in most of those languages we build gentilics/demonyms like that. I guess that's where it came from. Of course, the differentiation already exists in some languages. For example, in Spanish lesbian is lesbiana, and lesbian (the denonym) is lesbia/lesbio.

lol, wow, we joked about that whole people from lesbos thing in my classical mythology class. i dont think they will win though. i mean, yeah it m ight get asumed your claiming your a lesbian, but u can always say I'm from lesbos instead of i'm a lesbian. and really they woldnt say i'm a lesbian wouldnt it just be i'm lesbian? guess it depends on what there asked. cause i never say i'm an american, the few times i'm asked my nationality, its always i'm poilish, i'm chech, and i'm american. no a thrown in.
