So I was watching TV last night, and this ad for LEVI Jeans came on- I'd seen it before, where he pulls up his pants and this phone booth pops up from the ground, and there's a hot lady there. She starts mad-doggin' him, and then he pulls his pants up the rest of the way (and the street and everything explodes into his room) and the lady gets out of the phone booth, and they walk off together.
SO, when the phone booth popped up, this time, I was astonished to see a MAN IN THE PHONE BOOTH!!! Woohoo!! They re-shot the commerical, so that it's two dudes, and the hot dude in the phone booth makes eyes at the guy pulling on his pants, and then THEY walk off together.
How awesome is that?
I mean, this new version of that ad might have been running for a while, and I just don't watch enough TV and to know that it's OLD NEWS or something- but.... Dude! National TV and stuff! (Or... At least Boston TV!)
original commercial, with a chick

its always been that way.
its always been that way. its just that they aired the gay one within the safe zone of logo where it wouldnt hurt their profit margin by enlivening hobophobic viewers against them, while at the same time giving the illusion to us that they are taking a big marketing risk/ representing us.
maybe it will pay off.
What's always been that
What's always been that way?
I mean, I knew they weren't taking a risk- why would they? They're a company selling a product. I just thought it was cool how surprised I was, since I'd seen the heterosexual version so many times.
Plus, I haven't seen very many other ads depicting homosexuality, which means they're one of few who are doing anything at all.
I think.....It'll pay off in that where it's accepted it'll become more so, and eventually start leaking a little further and a little further- sort of like in Photoshop, when you paint-bucket a spot, if you keep clicking, the color starts to leak into the stuff around it.
Hahaha that's FANTASTIC.
Hahaha that's FANTASTIC. Makes the world a little bit of a better place. ^^

Like Milla Jovovich. God, she's beautiful. I LOVE her.
Haha
Ginger's right, but it is a very nice commercial, and even though Levi's copped out in the end, the fact that they took the initiative to at least make the ad says something, just like Dolce and G's latest (and only?) TV ads with males and females making out!
Then again, both brands have ALWAYS appealed to gays (not lesbians for the large part, sorry dears!), Levis outwardly in a lot of ads, and D&G primarily through the more backstage world of models/designers/direct purchasers - who are all gay and connect.
What Ginger meant specifically is that they always had that gay ad to BEGIN WITH, they actually shot it *first*, then shot the one with the girl (they planned to do both, but the fact of the matter is that the gay one was available first!) and went against running the gay one. There were a bunch of online articles on it when the information was leaked, and there's at least half a dozen similar ad decisions, although many of those are from smaller brands.
There was a Volkswagon ad a few years ago of a guy and a girl coming up for air in a Volkswagon beetle (modern of course) and saying "That was good" and then another girl pops up and says "Ya" and then the tagline comes up: More Room Than You Think. Or something similar, but they had actually done the commercial way before and could've been running it for months, but only ran it after the car being advertised was down in sales or after a year, or at least after a long time, and then they only showed it on certain gay-friendly stations at certain times.
Oh well, any GLBT commercial is a good commercial for us in some way, any publicity is good publicity!
You're Amazing.
Oh, that's what she meant! I
Oh, that's what she meant! I had no idea what she meant.
That's cool. And I totally agree- any GLBT commercial is helpful in some way!
And.. Now that you mention it, I think I remember seeing a Levi's ad in a magazine with two really buff sailors kissing or something when I was younger.
