Now, this may be very subjective...

But I'd be interested to see what the responses are!

Do you judge middle class to = 2 cars and a house?
Is rich = a different outfit for a month and a half?
Is poor = no summer/winter residence(s)?

Are you well off but not exposed to many luxuries? Are you fully able to afford 4+ years of post-secondary education?

Is your family in debt?

Are you the type of person who drains their bank account? Do you have hundreds of dollars in your bank account? Do you have tens of thousands? Do you have a trust fund? Do you have an invaluable last name or old money?

Hmm!

You're Amazing.

a question you'd never ask at a dinner party

Oh dear, difficult to say. Talking about money is so embarrassing.

Because I live in an expensive and quite affluent area, so while I have a very high standard of living the money doesn't go anywhere near as far as it would in other places.

Our house is big, but my parents are still paying the morgage. We have two cars, private health insurance through my dad's job (bear in mind I live in the UK where we have the NHS so this is unusual), we go on holiday twice a year, I went to private school and we have a cleaner.

So we're well off.

But growing up me and my siblings didn't get lots of things bought for us and we didn't get pocket money. But we did get to do things like piano lessons and dancing and all that.

I'm not that sure about my parents' finances (you just don't ask what people earn). Money goes very quicky on morgage, pensions, bills and food ect. We don't have lots and lots of money floating around and I think we do have some debt (as well as the morgage), but to be honest I don't really know. My dad works in the City and my mum has a part time job that pays quite well (again I don't know how much). My dad's annual bonus is more than my mum earns in a year.
If my dad had stayed on at Merrill Lynch we'd have been much, much richer, but then dad would probably have had some sort of breakdown because he hated it there.

Although having a very nice lifestyle makes me feel quite squeamish I do want to point out my dad works very, very long hours and he works very hard. I get it all handed to me on a plate, but he didn't.

Personally I really cheap, let's call it thrifty. For everything I spend I do the calculation of how long it would take me to earn the money I'm using. This is a very depressing bit of maths. Getting things cheaply makes me happier than being able to squander money on luxuries would. And every week I transfer part of my wages into my savings account.

But to keep living to the standard I'm accustomed I'll need a very well paying job when I'm older. Also the idea of debt terrifies me.

But after all that I'm not upper middle class. Class here is as much about background and opinions and location and lifestyle as it is about income.
In America you'd call what I am upper middle class. But it's not what I'd call it- that's the box I ticked though on the poll though.

It also depends on many

It also depends on many other variables. Take me for example
My dad works 24/7 basically has a 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom house that i used to live in with my mom sister and him things happened and now he lives in it alone for the time being. He has season tickets to NBA and WNBA basketball, he's also looking at partial season tickets for MLB. He buys me tickets to whatever concerts or plays i want.
My mom on the other hand is putting 1 child through university and is saving for the next one (me). I know she has a TON of debt and pennies are tight but i still get to do stuff like music lessons. But i know that if i want stufff i either ask my dad or try to pay for at least half if not all of it myself except for christmas and birthdays were she spends all year pinching pennies to make them special.
Because i live with my mom and don't like to use my dad's money with the exception of WNBA i chose lower middle class... because in my area that's what i am. The majority of my friends and class mates get cars as soon as they can drive on their own, never have to work - around the house or for money, and just get things handed to them. The kids who's parents buy them used cars in my area are considered middle class.
~~~Fear is only a verb if you let it be.. don't you dare let go of my hand~~~
Money, ah? Well... we live
Money, ah?
Well... we live in a large, very well-appointed apartment, in one of the 'two best' zones in the city, with a maid (who sleeps in the apartment) and another coming in in the mornings. Both of my parents come from old families, so, following tradition, I got the luxury of having a trust-fund, and a nice and neat card I can use at leisure.
We have a couple apartments in other places in the world, and one car per person, we travel (or I do, at least, my parents like to stay home) every vacation, I'm going into 5-year university here, following up with another career (other 4 years) in the US or the UK. Of course, I'll need to get a very good job in the future (like when I'm....30?) to be able to keep my life as it is, so that is a little scary (what if I turn out to be a bad lawyer?!).
So, I marked 'rich' because of that, and because I am exposed to lots of luxuries, total economic freedom, and because my parents spoil me a lot, independently of what that spoiling may cost. Oh, I also have some stocks, and they are giving me a nice little profit, but it's more like me playing with stocks than anything serious.
hard to place
the world can be judgemental. You're poor and it sucks, but being rich isn't necessarily that satisfying either.
I know I'm in the upper scale, but sometimes its so easy to get judged because of what you have.
it depends. in my area, I'm
it depends. in my area, I'm an average middle to upper middle class citizen. but, anywhere outside California, and you could probably buy each person in my family a decent sized house for the price my little 4 bed, 2.5 bathroom one story house would go for here.
