Writing Scholarship App, to Include Homosexuality or Not?

Haha, it's not as though "gay" is listed as something to circle or check off, but over the past few days I've been debating making one of the minor essays for a particular scholarship be about the challenge being a closeted homosexual has had on my school life.

Thoughts?

I can see it being bad on a lot of levels, if the reader is anti-homosexual then hmm. At the same time though, the scholarship isn't supposed to discriminate against anything, and it would honestly be something else to make me stand out amongst thousands of other applicants. It's also not just a ploy to score some money, I know that being closeted has inhibited me a lot in school.

The essay is 250 words or less, I have a fine draft for it which outlines what I want, I'm just uncertain right now. Realistically, if the scholarship people wrote something up about me (as a recipient), yippee for an easy out! Pun intended. It's also not the only essay, but it's one more that can be submitted describing family life/economic situation/extenuating circumstances etc. relevant to the whole application.

If someone wants to read what I have and then say yay or nay, let me know; sorry that this isn't a fun-filled or macabre entry, I really could use some advice though!

Gopherit...

I don't see how it could go too terribly bad. If nothing else, you're right, it'll probably make you stand out. *Shrugs*, I can look at it. Just, I'm not an expert on scholarship applications, so promise you won't put too much stock in my opinion.

Out of curiosity: what's the scholarship for?

Sounds like a good idea to me

If they don't like your essay and don't give a good reason (do they give you their reasons or just send you a you-suck-go-die type letter?) you can probably accuse them of discrimination. And it's a valid topic. As long as it's well written and looks like you've made a lot of effort, which I'm sure is the case, you should have a good chance of getting the scholarship.

Thanks,

Apuff gave me some insight on what I sent him and I decided to go through with it and am happy with the essay. I realize if I hadn't used my homosexuality in there it'd be a bit sparse of an essay anyway. I don't think accusing them of discrimination is going to happen, since AFAIK you are only notified in a few months as to whether or not you have been selected for regional interviews.

Besides, if I get to the interview stage and someone seems anti-gay there, accusing them of discrimination would be a liiiiittle unlikely of having a good outcome, unless I write a notable letter or actually sued. Which I wouldn't!

You're Amazing.

Well...

Oasis is on my resume, because I figure anyone who doesn't want to hire me if I'm gay... do I really want to work there?
