A pair of 15-year-old Crystal Lake girls are facing felony hate crime charges alleging they plastered their high school walls with fliers containing anti-homosexual comments and showing two men kissing.

The incident occurred within the last week at a Crystal Lake school, First Assistant McHenry County State's Attorney Thomas Carroll confirmed, and landed at least one of the girls in juvenile detention.

The fliers and remarks, Carroll said, appeared to be directed toward a male classmate of the girls with whom they had recently feuded."You can be charged with a hate crime if you make a statement or take an action that inflicts injury or incites a breach of the peace based on a person's race, creed, gender or perceived sexual orientation," Carroll said.
