Virginity was only important
Virginity was only important in the context of ensuring that children born within a marriage were legitimate- the wealthier you were the more important it became because the more you stood to lose to a child that wasn't of your blood line. Because under primogeniture if you marry a girl that's already preggers and she has son then that's your whole estate gone.
The fetishisation of virginty is such a throwback. Sexual activity that is significant for one person will be different for another. This weird grading system where intercourse is at the top of an ascending scale of possible sexual activity, undermines the reality of sexuality for most people. What might be an incredably intimate act for one person with one partner, is different for another person with a different partner.

The actual status of virginity isn't important so much as what for me is? will be? the intimate act of sex. Being a virgin means I haven't been emotionally ready or had the opportunity. And that's not such the hugest deal.
