In all seriousness, I think it's wonderful that I can now get married in South Africa. It's one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with an amazing culture.

question for the SA members.
If the marrage is legal there. Is it then legal in the surrounding countrys also? That is to say do they except gay marrage done in SA?
Also do you have to be a citizen of SA to get married there?

The only country in Africa that gay marriage is legal in is South Africa. It is NOT accepted, and a lot of people are wondering how long it will last...
Not sure about citizenship, but if you got a married in SA, then moved back to the states (other than Mass and Rhode Island) it would mean nothing.

when we turned into the new south africa in 94, all the old laws didn't stop existing. We didn't start from scratch.
So nobody in the current government ever made it illegal. It was still illegal from the 60's or so. So religious nuts wanted to keep it that way, but they were overruled.
Getting rid of those laws is just part of climbing out of the morass that was the old regime, along with the racist laws, etc.

Yes in canada it is leagal. Same-sex marriage was legalized across Canada by the Civil Marriage Act enacted on July 20, 2005. I love Paul Martin for introducing this in the Canadian House of Commons. He Rocks.

Gay marriage is only legal in Massachusetts, but states like Vermont, New Jersey, California, etc. offer some type of protection (NJ offers equal rights, just different name).
