Expectations Chapter 2

ForeverEndedToday's picture

Okay, so after having writers block for a week or so here is chapter two (chapter 1 is here: http://www.oasismag.com/2006/12/expectations-chapter-1-new-story ) I completely changed the plot so now my plot is based on what I want the characters to do at the moment I write it, which is bad, but I like it. Thanks to the people who gave me advice before, hopefully I used it in this chapter. If you have any constructive criticism for this chapter that would be great thanks for reading.
CHAPTER 2:
“Nice to meet you,” Kirsten politely responded. She shook hands with them, accidentally squeezing too hard with Mrs.lade causing her to slightly retract, and pausing slightly before pulling away from Raye’s hand. While she shook hands with Raye, Kirsten was able to look her over.

She was able to notice that their eyes were nearly level Kirsten being slightly taller. Raye’s eyes were a storm color blue that made her name fit even more perfectly. Her brown hair was straight, and shoulder length with one side neatly tucked behind the right ear. Kirsten thought she dressed very conservatively, but then re-examined her position when she remembered that so did everyone else who attends church. However, Raye’s clothes accented her small, but strong features, and left Kirsten to imagine what was hidden beneath.

“The Lade’s just moved here from southern Vermont, and have decided to attend our church,” her mom’s voice jolted her from Raye and into the present moment, “we thought you two might like to meet each other,” Mrs. Reed said.

“Hi,” Raye said awkwardly.
“Hey.” Kirsten tried to respond in a cool, collective manner, but came off as the opposite.
“We’ll just leave you two girls to talk while we do the same over there.” Mr.Lade pointed to a tree a little ways from the end of the church steps. Both sets of parents left the girls with Mr.Reed winking at his daughter.

“Great,” Kirsten thought, “he’s trying to set me up. Wonderful, I have the most embarrassing parents on the face of the earth. I don’t even know if she is gay!”

“What does your shirt say?”
“Wha- oh, um, here.” Kirsten slightly turned to face Raye directly and pulled her shirt tight to smooth out the wrinkles. Kirsten herself couldn’t remember what shirt she was wearing (something that often happened). She looked down, and smiled. Kirsten smiled at her luck.

Raye mumbled what the t-shirt said, “May the fetus you save be gay.” She paused to think about it, and then burst out laughing.
“That’s hilarious.”
Kirsten cracked a smile. “Thanks, I try my best. My ex-girlfriend got it for me, actually.” She studied her carefully taking in every bit of her reaction.
“Ohh that’s really sweet! I wish my ex-girlfriend had gotten me something like that, she’s an ass though.”
Her smile broadened, and she laughed a little, “Yeah, mine too.”
“Well, I guess we have something in common!” Raye removed a wisp of hair from her eyes that had been blown in the wind, and stuffed her hands in her pockets, giving Kirsten a crooked smile.
“Is she flirting with me?” Kirsten thought, “Please say she is.” “Yeah I guess we do,” Kirsten replied giving back the same smile.
“It’s cold out here.” Raye was shivering and rocking back on her feet to regain warmth. Kirsten mentally abused herself, “Crap maybe she wasn’t flirting with me. Do I sound like a fucking idiot? Fuck. Uggh I suck at this.”
“Yeah it is.” Kirsten turned her head to look around and found that there were only the two couples, and them standing in front of the building.
“And you spent two hours out here? I saw you from the window, I hope you don’t think I was spying or anything, it’s just that you look a lot like your dad who was sitting in the same pew as us and…I’m rambling,” she laughed, “I’m sorry”

Kirsten laughed along with her. “Well technically only 20 minutes. I spend the rest of the time at a friend’s house. I do it because I don’t want to listen to someone ramble on about what I don’t believe in so…yeah”

“That’s cool, church is boring, yet I believe in God, so it looks like I’m staying indoors.”
They both laughed.
“Ughh need warmth!”
Raye again laughed, “Come on, I’ll get our parents, I’m not going to be responsible for your frost bite.”
