okay, if i can pull it off, i think what i'd like to do as a career, is join the air force, be a medical officer in there, maybe for a while, maybe forever.

if i do leave, once i'm done, i'm gonna go around the world doing the doctors without borders thing and help people.

Eh...

The armed forces can be a pretty negative experience for non-heterosexuals. You basically live with the notion that your life can be disrupted at any moment, by anyone you hapen to cross.

Read Reichen Lehmkuhl's new book, which talks about his experiences just in the Air Force Academy. I believe that if you forced out of the military based on your sexuality before your contract is up, you will owe the military for the full cost of your training.

Also, 2,950 troops to date didn't get to follow through with their plans of what they wanted to do after the military, because they died in Iraq. And being a medical officer means you have to be near where people get injured, which means you have to be close to the hot zones. So, I would say that you need to want to go into the military, not use it as a stepping stone to do more altruistic things later. There are less deadly ways to an altruistic life.

It's a big decision, so think it through. Personally, I'd never consider it.

well

I've planned every since maybe my freshman year of high school to do exactly what you are thinking of. I've been in Junior ROTC for 4 years and have been planning on being in ROTC in college in order to join the military as an officer, however, since then I've become involved in this relaionship of mine... And, I'm still contemplating.... It'd be fine to go the military route if you want to hide your relationship for possibly ever or until MAYBE the military changes it's policy, but... Who wants to hide? I say it's not worth it. Even though I've spent 4 years in preparation for the military ALREADY... there's just no way I can be involved with someone of the same sex and join the military or be affiliated with it after high school, no way. I can't do it. Think about it! Good luck.
