Christmas. The lovely time of year when a jolly old fat man comes down your chimney and gives you the presents that you so desperately wanted.
That's what I want to believe. I want to believe in that magical realm of make-believe that anything is possible. That with just the uttering of a few simple words magic can take flight and grant us our deepest wishes. I think that deep down that's what we all want to believe.
Unfortunately, with what Christmas has become, it's hard to actually believe this anymore. Every year I look around and I see things becoming worse and worse. Now don't get me wrong, I love Christmas, but if you just look at the whole thing it's become completely about the gifts.
It's no longer about the magic of giving from one person to the next with no care if you get something or not. People are just not as greatful as they once were. It's not necessarily a bad thing. I mean the world changes every day, no matter what we do. We simply have to move forward, but what happened to the magic that we use to have?
It use to be you could give someone a gift and they would give you a gift and you would open it up and love it no matter what. Now it just seems like people are getting gifts and if it's not exactly what you want you throw it down and let that person know it's not what you want. I see it all the time, especially in schools, but that's a completely different rant.
Christmas is a fantastic time of year and people will continue to love it no matter what happens. It's a simple fact. All that I'm saying is this year give a person a gift and don't expect to get one in return. The holiday is not intended for people to receive. It is intended for people to give. Now, if you really think about it, when you give you receive.
I'm Chris Helton. Merry Christmas.

Hmmm...
Yes but Christmas has been commercial ever since Coca-Cola turned Sant Claus red. Its not exactly a new phenonemon
And I shall now sing you a short and awful song:
"Last Christmas I gave you my heart
But the very next day you gave it away
This year to save me from tears
I'll give it someone special, special"
"Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suf-fer-ing"
The whole Christmas
The whole Christmas commercial fiasco used to bum me out too. Now I just sink myself into my holiday gift project each year and let other people's humbug roll off my back. I can't help it if others can't find any joy in the Christmas season. All I can do is try my best to spread good cheer to those who appreciate it and tune out those who don't. It takes some practice, but it can be done. :-)
