I came to the conclusion today that my school needs to do a play about teen homoselxuality. You know, gay awareness. We just recently had a play about awareness of domestic violence, and i thought, why not do something like that for hoosexuality?
I was originally thinking of basing it on Julie anne Peters' Keeping You a Secret, but when I started writing an email to her asking for permission to use her story, I thought, why not be more original and creative, and create your own story?
So I will. I'll write the play, and direct it, and have the drama department head help me by editing the script, and help with casting, and well, whatever else. I've never written and directed a play before. I've never even taken a drama course. But I learned recently i English, that I have a knack for both writing and acting. Not that I want to act in this play.
Anyway. I'm really stoked about this idea. I can't wait to talk to my teacher about it and get started on the script. my school isn't very homophobic, but there's never any effort put into education people about it. I mean, you'd think there would be by now. Homosexuality isn't going to go away, and people need to learn to accept that, whether they are straight or not.

Cool!
I'm actually thinking of doing a similar thing at my school. I'm doing an independent study of modern theatre, so it would be like the culmination of my project. I have to write a play anyway, so I figure I might as well write it about something I care about. :) Only problem is, I'm currently closeted...
Anyways, if you decide writing a play is too much, and would just like to put one on, I'd suggest The Laramie Project. It describes the aftermath in the town of Laramie after Matthew Shepherd was murdered there due to his homosexuality. Although it's not convential theatre, it's absolutely amazing and it really gets the point across. And the best part of all? All the dialouge and characters are real. Since the theatre group went to Laramie and interviewd people after Matthew's murder, they made the entire play out of the interviews.
It's really a cool idea, and an amazing play to boot!
Well...
A lot of plays on this topic already exist. There are also play versions of "Beautiful Thing" and other things already available.
I know a local gay theatre here in San Francisco (www.nctcsf.org) has a whole teen series they tour around local schools. I'm not sure if they license their scripts out, or if they use third party stuff. Worth looking into, ask Ed Decker.

well, i guess in my area the idea is virtually unheard of, as far as holding a school play based on the subject goes. I mean sure, there probably have been plays at the Grand Theatre or the JLC, but those are with actual actors, and are directed to an audince who pays to see the play voluntarily. I'm still debating whether I should have this like the domestic violence play, where the whole school is forced into seeing it, and the day's schedule is altered to allow that. I doubt that would be permitted though. I'd have to ask.
Anywho. Yeah. This would be something new for the area i'm in. I mean, last year, i remember there was a play about a guy who is always called gay, and he wasn't really sure if he was. He never ended up coming to a conclusion though. As well, two girls who were drunk at a party made out, and someone took a picture, but of course, both girls were in fact straight. but the theme was anti-bullying, there was more than just homosexuality involved. My idea is to have somehting wholy involved with it. A direct message, or metaphorical slap in the face telling students and society that it is acceptible, natural, and unavoidable. Anyway. I'm gonna start working on this idea right away :)
I think I will come up with my own idea actually. I mean, sure, basing a play on Matthew shepherd would really get the message across, but I feel like using my own creative ideas for this now. Thanks for the info and suggestions though :)
YAY for YOU!!
Hey! I think it's a great idea, and really brave of you too. i'd be too scared to do something like that right now(i'm still trying to deal with coming out) but it's great that you're doing it. And it's inspiring too. YAY for you!!! hope it turns out AWESOME!!!
