I'd recommend "But I'm a Cheerleader". It's pretty hilarious.
It's mainly about lesbians, but it has gay boyz in it too.
Hmm...
Cheerleader was funny, but would definitely only make my good list, not great.

Sorry, I should have pointed
Sorry, I should have pointed out that these movies are about guys. I'm sure that there are great lesbian movies out there too but, being a guy, I tend to hunt for movies about other guys. Lesbians, help us out here and post some of your faves. I don't want you to be left out.
I should also say that some of these movies may also probably also be more good than great, but I've seen so many really bad gay films, it's a real treat when I run across one that has a good story and is well-acted.
I got all these movies on Netflix. They're also all available on Amazon.

alrighty then...
movies i've seen that have queer FEMALE characters:
-Chutney Popcorn (about a pregnant indian dyke and her caucasian gf)
-Foxfire (bunch o' hiskooler girls. one of them is angelina. good cast)
-Tipping the Velvet (3-part series, slightly too long, 1st part is the best)
-My New Best Freind (its not really about queer people at all, but there is about 2 scenes with gurl-on-gurl action. hot cast, but stupid-ass plot).
-Bound (this one is OLD-SKOOL. kind of scary and violent, prolly rated R? it's about crime and the mafia. suspenseful, action-y.)
-Keep Not Silent (a documentary about orthodox lesbians in israel, aka "Orthodykes". quite eye-opening)
-My Summer of Love (indie-ish drama starring two british girls. im not sure if they're gay or what, but they do sleep together)
-Kissing Jessica Stein (EXCELLENT. funny and cute. about a jewish lady in NYC who, after years of unsuccessfully dating guys, decides to go out with a funky dyke. Wacky jewish family hijinks ensue. good timez)
"CO-ED FUN" (films featuring guy and girl gay characters):
-But I'm a Cheerleader (a gay cheerleader is sent to a deprogramming camp to straighten her out. its a dark comedy/parody. also good cast)
-QUEER AS FOLK ON DVD (ok, ok, it's not a movie. its a tv series. but its really really good! highly recommended. Brian is HAWT. dont delay)
-RENT (a contemporary rock musical. was in theatres last yr, and like really super big. if u haven't seen it yet... whats wrong with u?)
-Trembling Before G-d (documentary about queer Jewish ppl worldwide, in the US, England, Israel, etc. Kool film)
"FOR THE BOYZ" (movies about gay dudes):
-Hedwig & the Angry Inch (one of my fave films of ALL TIME. Another rock musical. About a cross-dressing rockstar in love with another rockstar. funny, sad, cute, and KICK-ASS soundtrack. check it out, for sure.)
-C.R.A.Z.Y (Canadian film. i havent actually seen this yet, but ive heard great reviews. i believe its about a young gay Quebecer struggling with his identity.)
thats it for NOW... its a lot, i know... i HEART my mooveez! :o)
Has anyone seen "To Wong
Has anyone seen "To Wong Foo..."? That is an awesome movie. It is hilarious. It has Patrick Swayze in it and he plays a drag queen, it is the funniest movie I have seen.

I liked Party Monster, but it's disturbing. If you want a feel-good film, that ain't the one to rent, but it's definitely worth seeing.

How Silly of Me
I forgot to list one of the very first "gay" movies I ever saw - My Own Private Idaho. An odd film, but definitely worthy of the list.

I Totally Forgot
If you haven't seen it already, you have GOT to check out The Celluloid Closet. It's a documentary, narrated by Lily Tomlin, about the history of gay people in cinema. It's a really good flick - a definite must-see. I've seen it at least a couple dozen times.
