SO MAD--do I report this to the admin.?

While in Chem. class today, we were talking about the ancient Greeks' and Romans' contributions to science. It was all fine, and I, of course, dominated the discussion (I don't mean to be arrogant...but I'm in class with a bunch or morons, the teacher isn't much better, and I'm taking Latin III and studying ancient Greek). Then, my teacher (a man) makes a comment that really offended me--he said something along the lines of "...but there was a lot of homosexuality in ancient Greek culture, which eventually led to their downfall. There was also a lot of homosexuality amoung the Romans. Homosexuality or other immoral acts led to the downfall of almost every major civilization." I was aghast! I looked to my friend, April, and whispered to her "April--do I say something? Not only do I find that offensive, but I'm certain that I know more about ancient western culture than him (our teacher."...but I kept silent, because I'm not completely out at school, and I need to get good grades this year, and I don't want a teacher to hate me...but the more I think about it, the more I think I should go to the administration. What do I do?

Thats a tough one because if you do report it they would probably have to investigate the complaint by asking other students if he said it and stuff, and you may risk being outed to your school.
In saying that the guy sounds like a bastard and deserves to be ratted out.But being outed to everyone could be a consequence you would have to deal with as well.good luck with whatever you decide.

Well, I told my mom a few months ago, and told my step-dad the other night (he suggested that I join the military, and I replied "They don't allow gays in the army"...he hated that)...so I don't care if I'm outed.

I'd

I'd report it because I have nothing to fear from doing so. It really pisses me off when people say things like that and I hope you do report it but it's up to your discresion. Now while what he did say is considered to be a theory (although a horribly innacurate one) about the downfall of Greece and Rome it does not mean that that should be the only side of the story presented. I would have probably argued with the teacher because I too know a great deal about ancient greece and rome.

Yes

Definitely say something. You can report him and ask to remain anonymous. Really, teachers are looked upon as authority figures, and students take what they say to be true, and if he goes around saying stuff like this to his students, he's going to teach them to be homophobic. I'd definitely report it. You can put it into writing if you'd feel uncomfortable talking to someone, and however you do it it would probably be a good idea to ask to remain anonymous, but it's really scary when a teacher misuses his/her power to teach students his/her own opinions as fact.

He's a bigoted asshole, let me tell you.

Also, the ancient Greeks were just a lil bit more accepting when it came to homosexuality, that's all. Of course (duh) that didn't lead to their downfall! Does that son of a bitch know what "volcano" and "war" mean? Or does he think they were too gay to fight their enemies or run away from lava? Gosh.
