It all started when...

I stared at those four words. It was all I'd written on the mainly blank page after about fifteen minutes. Those four innocent words; how much weight they could hold. How many times had those words been said? How many emotions had been present when those words were uttered?

Excitement: "It all started when I found the letter in the mail!"

Fear: "It all started when I decided to walk home alone from the movies."

Sadness: "It all started when she started coughing."

Four words that could say a million things in the span of twenty seconds. But...what would mine say? What emotions would my four words hold? Surprise? Anger? Shock? Sitting in the small desk, I gazed at the chalkboard behind my teacher's head. The same words were written on the board. Glancing around the room, I noticed everyone else's head was bent, deep in concentration; the only sound came from the air-conditioner humming away in the window.

Absently, I counted the number of heads and hair colors in the room (14 brunettes, 7 blondes, 1 redhead.), my mind wandering aimlessly. What story could I spin from those innocent words? Tapping my pencil on my paper, I racked my brain for something, anything to write down. I had five minutes left and my brain was blank.

Listening to the clock tick, I was still looking all over the room, finally coming to a stop on her head. At that moment, she happened to glance up, and for a moment, our eyes met. A little grin played across her lips before she looked back down at her paper. My ears on fire, I stared down at my own paper, a grin spreading across my own lips. I set my pencil to paper...
