What is it WITH lousy nicknames??

Have you ever noticed how many slang words there are for gays and lesbians out there?? It's insulting! A lot
of them sound like another nasty word or something!! Here are my thoughts of some of them:

Faggot- Don't get me started on this one. It sounds disgusting, like "maggot."

Dyke- My younger sister made the oh-so-innocent observation that this word sounds like "dick". And she's
right! Honestly, it's awful. I hate the stereotype that gay men are feminine and that lesbians are
masculine. It's like whoever invented the word wanted to play to that concept.

Homo- I know that some people don't have a problem with this word, but I think it's appalling. It sounds like
"hobo", and we all know that's not exactly a compliment.

Queer- This word isn't often used to insult gays and lesbians anymore, but I still don't like it. It makes
me feel even more alienated, because my sexuality is a synonym for a word that used to mean "strange/weird"
in older times. Honestly, have you read Lord of the Rings lately? J.R.R. Tolkien uses the word "queer" five
or six times in the first chapters of The Fellowship, and I'm not even halfway through the book yet! It
feels strange, like the writer's making fun of me, even though I know he's not.

Basically, I'm not a big fan of slang words for homosexuals, and I'd really like it if everybody would just
stop using these words already!! I know that that is probably never going to happen in this lifetime, but
hey, this is a rant, right?

They won't stop using these w

They won't stop using these words, or, if they do, they'll just make up more. Still, I can understand this. It buggs me too.

When you judge another, you do not define them, you define yourself.

Only sometimes....

I can see where you are coming from and all, but sometimes you just have to take those words and own them. If you use those words to reference yourself, then they aren't insulting anymore, and takes power away from the homophobes....

Its like poilce officers and "pigs". Pig used to be an insulting term used to refer to police officers, but when the police department in NSW (Aust) got helicopters, they advertised it by putting on billboards everywhere, "Pigs really DO fly"
Gotta love it!

What I don't understand

I don't understand why demeaning slang terms for people who aren't white are so utterly rude that the person that speaks them are usually beat down, yet when anyone says anything bad about homosexuality... nothing. Nothing happens, sometimes someone calls attention to it saying it is bad, but that is it.
Why is that?
I'm not racist, I just noticed this. I want some answers in that respect.
~Thank you for the memories, a keepsake in my heart.
