I felt like a moron for not having done this before, but I merged an upstream fix for the private message module, and your inbox will now show how many messages you have left.
When it comes to understanding technical posts, I find it works to just ignore words like "upstream fix" and "message module." Then once they're out of the picture, I just use the Gestalt principle of closure to fill in the blanks. Then I've got my meaning. And I excitedly run off to check the news aggregator for the updates like everyone else who read the message.
(In seriousness though. It's nice to see the little number by the inbox.)
wow something i actually noticed before having to read about it, and a technically post i could sort of understand! (ok, ok i did need jeffs translation JUST to be sure)

Hmm...
As people in the other thread were saying it was getting too techie, I'll take this opportunity to translate Adrian's post from geek to English:
Your in-box will now automatically show how many unread private messages you have.
