I just wanted everyone to know that as of September 3rd of this year I will no longer be a conservative. Yes, I, Christina (inserts last name), am becoming a flaming liberal because I am going off to college. Not just any college, my dear friends, but Goucher College.
Upon my visit yesterday, I found that there is no conceivable way to retain my republican party affiliation because I may be smothered by hippies and anarchists.
So, once more to reiterate myself, as of September 3rd of this year you will no longer have to hear about my support of W. and my pro-war ramblings. No, this is not a joke. In all seriousness, my political veiws have started to come around.

Pathetic...
It is truly pathetic that you can not stand up for what you believe in. The market place of ideas has more than one ideal. Will you become straight next? Apparently more than half the world is...

Believe
Believe what you will. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. If you are a republican then by all means do so. Just because you are in a certain environment does not man you have to forfeit your identity.
If you have heard views that have opened your mind, then that is fantastic. However, I don't think you can say it starts at any particular point.
And believe me, you are never alone.

I remember you once called Gr
I remember you once called Greling Jackson "another sheep following the herd" for his criticism of the war in Iraq, and now you're going to change your Conservative views in order to fit in with "anarchists and hippies." Rather ironic, don't you think?
However ignorant and devoid of compassion I think pro-war views are ("Yes! I support dropping bombs on innocent civilians, turning thousands of newly orphaned children into terrorists-to-be and chauvinistically shoving my country's values down everybody else's throats. Believe me, that's a worthy price for putting an end to terrorism and spreading democratic values!"), changing them just to fit in is a completely chickenshit thing to do.
The Revolutionary Communist Party (Maoists) in the US used to officially consider homosexuality to be nothing more than "bourgeois decadence." However, they recently changed that view, not because they dreaded the idea of people thinking they're un-PC, but because they admitted publicly and to themselves that they were wrong, and that their position was bigoted. I personally think that joining any political party is tantamount to self-castration, and individual RCP members should have decided for themselves what they think instead of just going along with what was "official," but to confront your prejudice, coming right out and saying you are wrong takes a lot of guts, and is completely different from just kowtowing to the majority.
If you want to be a Republican, fine. I will admit that I find a lot of Conservative views to be completely repugnant, but neither I nor any other person can make someone change his or her views.
Ivory tower of truth

Thank you suffragettecity for issuing your edicts upon your ivory tower of truth. Its so good to know that you think that there is a right and wrong to everything, perhaps I should consult you for all my great questions to life. Because why would I go somewhere else? You obviously know that being accepting of homosexuality is right- and that to go against it you are a bigoted mindless fuckface with the intelligence of a squashed gnat. But oh no- god forbid that we should have different ideas from you oh great suffragettecity.
I lay prostate before thee.

I never said anything or anyone was right or wrong - I was paraphrasing what the RCP said, and saying they decided for themselves that they were wrong. If they want to be anti-gay, they're more than welcome to be. I don't agree with them, but I don't think they're wrong.
Did you notice that I also wrote that changing your political views in order to fit in is "chickenshit," i.e. you should stand up for what you believe in, kind of like what you wrote after denouncing narconut's decision as "pathetic." I know I'm outspoken about my own ideas, have a tendency to get a little emotional when people say things I don't like, and maybe I'm even kind of opinionated, but I don't think everyone else is wrong and full of shit and that I know everything and only my opinions matter.

"they admitted publicly and to themselves that they were wrong"
Since they were wrong they are now right which implies that there is an objective standard of right and wrong. One should be careful to not make statements from which one can derive implications.
I await your next edict from your ivory tower of moral superiority.

paraphrasing
I neither said nor implied that I thought they were wrong, I paraphrased what they said. Maybe you could read the report linked above yourself; what's written therein amounts to saying "we've thought it through and decided that we stand corrected."
I'm not a Communist, and I could care less about the RCP's present or past position on homosexuality or anything else - I was using that case as an example of one's views "coming around" as narconut put it, as opposed to changing them just to fit in.
Stepping back from the sudden outbreak of flames in here...
In a rather self-rightious way, suffragettecity made an interesting point. Why are you doing this? Most people pick their college based (at least in part) on their social/political views, but it seems to my humble, ign'ant self that you're doing the opposite. Or is this simply the other end of a long mental process that you've been going through for a long time? Not trying to get up on your shit or put you on the spot, but I am curious about your motivations.

Maybe Goucher just has good programs or something... Just because you're going to be "smothered by hippies and anarchists" ("smothered" is a good word to use if you're referring to the patchouli that'll fill the air).
Sorry if I sounded self-righteous, but going to a school where most of the students' political sensibilities lean towards the liberal or progressive doesn't mean you have to grow dreadlocks and join the Green Party; even if I went to Bob Jones University, I still wouldn't support Bush.
What I was trying to say when I was writing about the Revolutionary Communist Party was that they changed their position on homosexuality because they thought about it and decided their view was flawed, not because they were surrounded by people who disagreed with them.

Actually, my veiws have been coming around. I am becoming more interested in other political avenues. I apologize for anything I've said in the past. I knew going into this (the whole Goucher thing) that I would be exposed to mostly liberal ideology. I accept that. I wanted change. Some of my veiws will remain the same, but I am more than prepared to be enlightened by other opinions and points of veiw.
It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come fast and furious in a town called malice!!

Don't be sorry for what you said... Given that we at least supposedly live in a democracy, you don't need to feel sorry because of what your beliefs are. A lot of people, myself included, disagreed with some of what you wrote, but nobody ever said you couldn't post whatever you wanted to, or that you should feel ashamed of the content of your posts.
You will change again...
